Dioscuri Centre for spincaloritronics and magnonics

Summary

Spin caloritronics and magnonics are emerging fields that explore the utilisation of the electron's quantum property—spin—and its excitations, known as magnons, for information transfer and storage. In spin caloritronics, the interaction between spin and thermal gradients also plays a crucial role. Similar to spintronics, both fields aim to discover energy-efficient principles for future information technologies.

The Dioscuri Centre for Spin Caloritronics and Magnonics was established in October 2023 with the goal of investigating these phenomena in compensated magnetic materials, such as antiferromagnets and altermagnets. While ferromagnets have traditionally been the focus in spin caloritronics and magnonics, compensated materials offer advantages like faster dynamics and a broader range of available materials.

Our primary focus is on fundamental research with potential applications in developing new concepts for sustainable information technologies. We utilize advanced tools, including nanolithography for device fabrication and measurements of magneto-thermal transport in a vector cryostat. Additionally, we are actively working on developing spatially resolved techniques.

The Dioscuri initiative was launched by the Max Planck Society and is jointly supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports. The centre operates primarily as an experimental group and benefits from close collaboration with the Department of Spintronics and Nanoelectronics, which includes a strong theoretical team. On the German side, the centre is supported by Professor Sebastian T. B. Goennenwein from the University of Konstanz.
